Project Description
The four-storey building, erected in the 70s Of the 19th century for the Prussian army, which used it for storing its cannon gun carriages, is part of the Hevelianum Centre complex on the Fort Góra Gradowa (Gradowa Mountain). The structure is invaluable in terms of its architecture. It is an example of a skeleton framing construction, which is one of the most visually attractive building construction forms, one of the reasons for this is the fact that the construction elements are both externally and internally visible. Today the modern and ecologically sound building of the Artillery Coach House is home to conference and exhibition halls and a restaurant The space is available for companies, organizations and private individuals, who wish to hold conferences, workshops, training courses and cultural events.
A complete overhaul of the Artillery Coach building which lasted a year was completed on
30 September 2018.
Thanks to the support of the European Union the building had undergone a refurbishment. Remodelling of the facade took place. A complete overhaul was done to the interior of the building. Four double entrance gates were re-constructed on the ground floor and one double gate on the first floor. A bridge linking the level of the first floor with the ramp leading to the Wysokie Czoło Kurkowe (the archers’ bastion) was re-constructed. Modern technologies were applied, for example renewable energy sources: installing heat pumps, photovoltaic panels and ventillation systems that utilize heat recovery.
The Artillery Coach House is a place with a beautiful view of the city of Gdańsk, and the building itself was listed among the most important scenic viewpoints as part of the project called „The Crown of the Old Town of Gdańsk”. The over 20-hectare park of the Hevelianum is an excellent recreational space with a beautiful view of Gdańsk, situated in the city centre on the Fort Góra Gradowa (Gradowa Mountain). Scattered on the hills are several dozen 19th century masonry structures, once serving as part of the city’s fortifications – shelters, caponiers, ammunition depots, army barracks – which today provide shelter to a science centre.
