Project Description
The subject of the project are activities located in the downflow area towards the Radunia river. These are tasks aimed at directing the water in the areas of the central western part of the city of Pruszcz Gdański flooded by rainwater. The project will include the following tasks:
- Construction of a rainwater system collecting rainwater from the area of the streets: Raciborskiego, Obrońców Pokoju, Cichej, Karola Olszewskiego, Zygmunta Wróblewskiego and Ignacego Mościckiego to the planned retention reservoir;
- Construction of a retention reservoir in the Strzeleckiego housing estate.
Capacity of small retention facilities – 20,903 m3
Length of rainwater sewage system – 0.83 km
Population benefiting from flood protection measures – 4,200 persons. Weather anomalies and torrential rains occurring in recent years were the reason for local flooding in the centre of Pruszcz Gdański. The rainwater drainage system and the Radunia Canal running through the city centre were not able to absorb the large amounts of water. During heavy rainfall, the precipitation ranged from 30 to 50 mm per square metre, i.e. as much as the average in a month.
Flood protection
One way to solve this problem was to build retention reservoirs that can retain excess water in the upper terraces of the city and release it after rainfall has stopped. The Municipality of Pruszcz Gdański decided to build two retention reservoirs important from the point of view of flood safety.
A reservoir that cannot be seen
Due to dense local development in the area of Olszewskiego, Wróblewskiego and Mościckiego streets it was not possible to build an open tank, so it was decided to build an underground tank. It consists of 14 pipes with a diameter of 3 metres and a length of 47 to 59 metres. The new retention reservoir can hold over 5,000 m³ of water. If we wanted to fit it, for example, in a school swimming pool that can hold about 800 m³, we would need more than 6 such pools. Together with the tank, rainwater drainage was built in the streets: Olszewskiego, Wróblewskiego and Mościckiego, which supplies water to it. The area of the investment is currently a leveled area, from which only single ventilation chimneys protrude. It is hard to believe that under the thick layer of earth is hidden an investment for over PLN 10 million!
Tank for the benefit of people, animals and plants
The second tank is of open type and is situated in the area of the rapidly developing part of the city – the Strzeleckiego Housing Estate. The cost of its construction is PLN 1.7 million. The tank can hold about 15,000 m³ of water. Apart from its flood protection function, it will also serve as a recreation area for the local residents. It will also be an additional component of the ecosystem, as the water body may become a place of settlement for birds and amphibians.
The construction of both reservoirs was completed in the second half of 2018.
