Project Description
Thanks to co-financing with the funds from the Regional Operational Programme for the Pomeranian Voivodeship 2014-2020, the Municipality of Sopot is implementing a project which aims at revamping of the International Cycle Route R-10 which runs through Sopot. This project is an integral component of the strategic enterprise „Pomeranian Bicycle Routes of international significance: the R-10”, implemented by the municipalities which lie along this route.
What will be created and when?
The project’s objective is the overhaul and signage of existing Sopot bicycle paths (total length: 3.41 km of the existing 5.6 km, which form part of the R-10) that are part of the International Cycle Route R-10:
– the section located in Aleja Niepodległości (including the part found in Haffnera Street),
– the section located in Al. F. Mamuszki,
– the section located in Al. Wojska Polskiego in Sopot (the part from the Pier up to the border with Gdańsk).
The upgraded infrastructure will be extended by 4 new parking places, aimed at the users of the R-10, and also by appropriate signage, which will enable the users (cyclists) an easy access to tourist attractions (including cultural and natural ones) which are located in Sopot.
The project is already under way, and should be completed in 2020.
International Cycle Route R-10 – where is it located?
Route R-10, also known as Euro Velo 10, runs alongside the Baltic coast, traversing 9 countries. The route is over 8,000 km long. In Poland, it runs across the Pomeranian and the West Pomeranian voivodeships. In Sopot, the cycling route runs along the following streets: Al. Niepodległości, Haffnera Street, Powstańców Warszawy Street, Al. Mamuszki, Al. Wojska Polskiego. Thanks to the road network connecting Gdynia, Sopot and Gdańsk, it is the main transit and recreational route in the Tri-City.
Benefits for cyclists
The main benefit from the revamp of this route is the improvement in its quality, as many of its sections were heavily damaged. The route will also be widened, which is an essential factor with high volume bike traffic (over 5,000 bicycles in 24 hours). 4 rest sites will be created along the route, located in areas which are known for their tourist and leisure attractions, and the signage as well as references to places of interest will be of significant assistance to tourists from outside of the Tri-City. The construction work along the route as a whole follows the highest European standards – as only top quality workmanship admits a route into the Euro Velo certification standard category.
