Project Description
In recent years, due to a high level of accessibility of means of private transport, there has been a significant increase in the mobility of residents from the municipalities surrounding large urban agglomerations. More and more people decide to live in smaller neighbouring municipalities while choosing to work in the centre of the urban agglomeration. In the Pomorskie Voivodeship, this can lead to multiple traffic congestion on the roads leading out of the Tri-City during the morning and afternoon peak traffic periods. This is why getting more residents attracted to the public transportation system became a key challenge for the Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot metropolitan area municipalities.
Such a positive increase in the importance of alternatives for vehicular transport has been recorded in the Tri-City metropolitan area in connection with the development and upgrade of railway transportation in the recent years, especially of the expansion of the Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna (PKM). The next step to maintain this growth trend is the development of multimodal commuting using a variety of transportation means. This is the reason why EU investments focus on the creation and development of integrated transit hubs of public transportation and an improvement in their accessibility.
The City of Gdańsk implements a project under the name: „Integrated transit hubs: Gdańsk Główny, Gdańsk Wrzeszcz as well as access routes to the transit hubs of the Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna (PKM) [Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway] and the Szybka Kolej Miejska (SKM) [Fast Urban Rail] in the City of Gdańsk Municipality area”.
