Construction of the Gdynia-Karwiny Transport Hub

Project Description

The „Creation of a Public Transport Hub at the Gdynia-Karwiny Halt of Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna (Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway)” project is executed by the Municipality of Gdynia. The total investment cost will amount to over PLN 250 million, including almost PLN 35 million funds from the Regional Operational Programme for the Pomeranian Voivodeship 2014-2020. The project completion is scheduled for December 2021.

As part of the project, in the vicinity of the Gdynia-Karwiny halt of the Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway (PKM) a multi-storey parking lot able to accommodate 412 cars, 24 motorcycles and 112 bicycles will be created. Along the streets Nowowiczlińska, Chwaszczyńska and Wielkopolska which lead to the Gdynia-Karwiny PKM halt a total of 2,873 m bus lanes will be built. In order to make it easier for bikers to get to the PKM halt, a total of 4,260 m of bicycle paths and 256 m of pedestrian and bicycle paths will be constructed.

Comfortable City Travels

Thanks to the project implementation, residents will be able to change modes of public transport much easier during their travels. Drivers will have a possibility to leave their cars on the parking lot and continue their travel by PKM, bus or trolleybus. Bus and trolleybus passengers wishing to change to PKM will gain bus stops located right beside accessways to platforms. There will be also facilitations for bikers, as they will receive new bike paths and bike parking racks. Both the parking lot and the other parts of the project will be constructed in a way that will make access to public transport easier for disabled people.

Time Saving

Separating lanes designed for public transport along the Nowowiczlińska, Chwaszczyńska and Wielkopolska streets will allow buses and trolleybuses to reach the Karwiny PKM halt faster. The above, combined with the time needed to change a bus/trolleybus to PKM shortened due to the change of bus stop locations, will lead to a significant shortening of the total time of travel by public transport. Car drivers who will choose to use the parking lot at PKM Karwiny and continue their travel by municipal transport or PKM will also save time they used to lose standing in traffic jams and searching for a free parking space downtown.

Healthier Environment, Healthier Residents

Project implementation results, namely faster and more comfortable travelling by municipal transport, will encourage more Tricity residents to give up their cars and take PKM, a bus, tram and/or bike instead. This will lead to lower urban environment pollution with noise and exhaust gases deriving from cars standing in traffic jams. Lower pollution will positively affect the health of residents. Also, less cars moving about the streets of Gdynia will contribute to reducing the number of accidents.
