Project Description
Central Żuławy Water Utility Company [Centralny Wodociąg Żuławski] LLC in Nowy Dwór Gdański implemented a project financed from the European Regional Development Fund within the framework of the Regional Operational Programme of the Pomorskie Voivodeship for the years 2014-2020 under the name „Quality improvement and reduction in water loss at the Central Żuławy Water Utility Company – stage I. Construction of a Water Treatment Plant at Ząbrowo”.
The company is responsible for water intake and treatment as well as supply of drinking water to households in the area of Żuławy and the Vistula Spit. The Central Żuławy Water Utility is the largest drinking water supply system in Europe located in a rural area. It is situated in two voivodeships: Pomorskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie. It includes 3 districts: Malbork, Nowy Dwór as well as part of the Elbląg district. Water is produced at Ząbrowo, where a water treatment plant is located and from where water is distributed over the entire area by means of a water supply network with a combined total length of approx. 1145 km. For administrative purposes, the system covers the area of 11 municipalities. In the Pomorskie Voivodeship, it includes the following municipalities: Lichnowy, Stare Pole, Nowy Staw, Malbork, Nowy Dwór Gdański, Ostaszewo, Stegna and Sztutowo. In the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship, it covers the municipality of Gronowo Elbląskie and a part of the Elbląg municipality. The water supply network serves the needs of approximately 99% residents of the above-mentioned municipalities.
The project aims to provide the Żuławy and the Vistula Spit residents with adequate quality and quantity of drinking water. The existing water treatment plant built in the 60s was already over-exploited to the limits. The water losses in the system exceeded 30%. This necessitated a construction of a new water treatment plant (improvement in water quality) and an installation of a monitoring system at 10 sites of the central water supply network as well as at 20 wells located within the water intake area (reduction in water losses).
The project included i.a.:
- construction of a water treatment plant with a capacity of 800 m3/h at the Water Production Plant in Ząbrowo along with all necessary equipment and technology for filtration, aeration, rinsing, pumping, chlorination, steering and control as well as a pump station with a capacity of 1200 m3/h,
- an overhaul of the existing water tanks with the joint capacity of 2000 m3 and construction of a new tank with a capacity of 2260 m3,
- an overhaul of existing networks in the area covered by the investment,
- construction of a supply infrastructure including a laboratory,
- a disassembly and dismantling of non-essential structures and components of the water intake equipment,
- a monitoring system of the central network at the consumer nodes as well as monitoring of the 20 wells located within the water intake area.
The launch of the new Water Treatment Plant significantly improved the quality of water supplied to the water network receivers. The construction of a well monitoring system and the employment of new water treatment technology ensured the stability of the water treatment process. The launch of the new water treatment plant also contributed towards savings with regard to water resources and energy by means of a reduction in losses of water and electricity.
