Project Description
Construction of a stormwater harvesting system in the Functional Urban Area (FUA) Malbork-Sztum
Project title: Construction of a stormwater harvesting system which includes a system for rainwater and snowmelt retention and pretreatment
Beneficiary: City of Malbork
Programme: Regional Operational Programme of the Pomorskie Voivodeship for the years 2014-2020
Source of EU funding: European Regional Development Fund
Project implementation site: Functional Urban Area (FUA) Malbork-Sztum
Total value: PLN 19,937,571.6
EU co-financing: PLN 13,916,723.82
The enterprise is to increase water retention and minimize extreme consequences of climatic events in the area of FUA Malbork-Sztum through a construction of a stormwater harvesting system including a system for rainwater retention for catchment areas located within the borders of the city of Malbork as well as a construction and redevelopment of a critical section of the stormwater drainage system in the area of the City of Sztum – the project Partner.
Results of the enterprise
In the Malbork area:
• construction of new stormwater drainage system catchment areas for the existing and planned architectural infrastructure of the city of Malbork
• construction of a collectively managed stormwater harvesting system passing through ten catchment areas, collecting water from these catchments and feeding them into the River Nogat through an outlet that is being designed concurrently
• construction at the outlet from 4 partial catchment areas
• adaptation of existing natural water reservoirs (ponds) located on the so-called lower terrace, to act as retention reservoirs for the catchment areas which fall under the project, as well as an increase in the diameter of the collective stormwater harvesting system with the aim of limiting and slowing down the maximum stormwater drainage into the receiving water – the River Nogat (capacity of 7700 m3).
In Sztum:
• expansion of the existing stormwater drainage system catchment area for the existing architectural infrastructure of the city
• an upgrade of the collective stormwater harvesting system that passes through the city centre, collecting stormwater from that catchment area
• construction of a retention reservoir with the capacity of 249 m3.
Residents safety
The investment will facilitate stormwater drainage from the existing residential areas which are not equipped with stormwater drainage systems and will also provide utility infrastructure for areas with future plans for residential, services and public use development. Additionally, the enterprise aims to protect the existing architectural infrastructure of the city against periodic flash floods, caused by poor capacity of the existing networks of stormwater drainage systems in this region.
Environment friendly project
Thanks to the implementation of the project, the following issues will be addressed and solved:
• degradation of rainwater collectors
• penetration of sewage into the soil
• influx of the non-pretreated runoff stormwater into rivers and water reservoirs
• groundwater pollution
• degradation of the natural environment.
